Brief description:

Review of the second edition of Lord Holland’s Some Account of the Lives and Writings of Lope Felix de Vega Carpio and Guillen de Castro (1817). The book had originally seen the light in 1806 as Some Account of the Life and Writings of Lope Felix de Vega Carpio, and was expanded in 1817 to cover as well the life and work of Guillén de Castro. The reviewer, Robert Southey, happened to have written a review of the first edition for The Annual Review and History of Literature for 1806, edited by Arthur Aikin (London: Longman et al., 1807, pp. 397-411). This review includes a short account of Lope de Vega’s biography, and lays influence on the religious concerns of his life that permeate his oeuvre.
