Francis Jeffrey reviews the French version, although the review may have been prompted by the publication of the second English edition of Germaine De Stäel’s work (The Influence of Literature upon Society. 2 vols. London: H. Colburn, 1812). The first English edition had come out with the title A Treatise on Ancient and Modern Literature (London: G. Cawthorn, 1803). Although De Stäel comments on the epic romance The Cid and the classic playwrights Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca, Jeffrey only makes passing references to Spanish (early) romances and dramas.
